SDS Global Logistics Obtains NVOCC License

Washington, D.C.—SDS Global Logistics was recently granted its Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier (NVOCC) license from the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC). These licenses are obtained only after a thorough review by the FMC in which they validate transportation experience and credibility.

Typically, the NVOCC allows customers who could not obtain more favorable rates direct with steamship lines to work with shippers, with less-than-containerload (LCL) shipments to take advantage of the lower costs associated with being a big shipper. Non-vessel operating common carriers (NVOCC’s) book space on steamships in larger quantities at lower rates and sell space to shippers in smaller amounts. NVOCC’s consolidate small shipments into containerloads that move under one bill of lading. More favorable rates are passed on to the shipper. Services typically offered by NVOCC’s, in addition to customary services provided by freight forwarders, are: NVOCCs operate as carriers and should be evaluated by applying the same service, price, and delivery standards.

Elvia Bacares, SDS’s Vice President of Ocean Operations, who was instrumental in obtaining the license, was pleased with the quick response of the FMC in granting the license and anticipates a volume shift in the company’s ocean freight business. "The license will allow SDS to appeal to a much broader group of clients and allow us entry into many more markets. We are excited about the direction of the department and expect far greater volumes in the coming years—not only because of the license but because of market dynamics as well."
