TSA Regulations Add New Level of Administrative
Burden to Funeral Professionals

Most funeral professional are well aware at this point of the recent changes to the TSA shipping requirements when transporting the deceased. In addition to handling the ever growing demands of properly handling funeral arrangements, funeral directors and professionals are now being asked to understand the subtleties and legal ramifications of the transportation industry.

What many directors and other professionals may not be aware of, is that there are alternatives to dealing directly with the TSA. Certain Freight Forwarders are already qualified to deal with transportation issues every single day as their primary function. These transportation professionals know exactly what needs to be done to handle every shipment, whether it be the movement of the deceased, manufactured goods or any type of shipment. Even fewer Forwarders have experience in handling the transportation of the deceased, where, as most funeral professionals know, there are special needs involved.

A smart alternative that some funeral homes are starting to use is the outsourcing of this function. The cost is surprisingly low and the time, effort and stress that are avoided are likely going to offset any additional cost. Further, there are far less legal and compliance issues to deal with. And finally, this cost is easily transferable to the client.

John Zahorodny, Executive VP of Worldwide Operations at SDS Global Logistics knows first hand how it works on both sides of this type of shipment. "Most funeral directors would rather avoid the technical and compliance side of the shipment and instead focus on the customer service side, which drives their business. This is one of those clear cut win-win type of scenarios."

He continues by noting that "a qualified Freight Forwarder can qualify your business as a known shipper without the stress and agony of dealing directly with the Airline direct." In addition, they will process the necessary documents required for shipping via the airlines. This obviously will save enormous time, money and frustration over the long (and even not so long) term.
