September 1, 2010, Long Island City, NY
It was 1975 and the world was a different place. The Vietnam War was ending, President Nixon had recently resigned, inflation in the United States was near 10%, and despite all the turmoil in the world, the New York City business environment was ripe with possibilities. Those with foresight knew that there would be opportunities in all types of industries, but it was a real time for growth for the local transportation industry. It was in this year that John Racioppo, a then 18 year old future-entrepreneur, joined his cousin Tony in a family owned trucking company which made deliveries by van around Manhattan. The business was known as Security Delivery Service back then, and while it had been around for some time prior as a sole proprietorship, it was a newly formed corporation and John, at that time, became the company’s second employee.
John was a young man who would develop a laser like focus on the core business operations of SDS and helped the company become profitable with his attention to detail. This skill, along with Tony’s penchant for growing the business and the courage to add different services over the years led to an amazing marketplace and would later expand to markets around the world. John was integral part of developing the SDS business and brand. He became the Chief Operations Officer and was responsible for the firm’s day to day activities for its local and warehouse divisions for most of those years.
On September 1, 2010, John made the decision to step down as COO and pursue other lifetime goals, including among things, traveling the world. John continues to provide assistance to the company as needed but now spends less time on the New Jersey Turnpike and more time on A1A in his Florida home. John has been an essential part of the SDS fabric for many years and his presence will be missed. The entire SDS family from employees to customers to vendor partners all wish John the best of luck in all of his future endeavors.
But the sentiment is perhaps best summed up by his partner of 35 years, Tony Racioppo, who said, “it has been a pleasure watching John develop from a high energy young man to a smart and savvy businessman. Having John as a partner allowed me to be the face of SDS while he stood behind the scenes making sure that everything went as it should. We have grown to be more like brothers and I hope and pray that John and his wife Elda enjoy many happy and healthy years of retirement.”
